WILDLIFE RECOVERY APPEAL

Help Australian Species on the Road to Recovery.

Last summer, our worst-ever drought led into these catastrophic bushfires. We lost 12 million hectares of habitat and more than a billion native animals.

With all the fires in NSW now thankfully under control, we are only now getting a clear picture of the damage to animal populations and habitat. What we are seeing is an unprecedented loss of wildlife and destruction of habitat.

This is part of the enormous challenge Australia is facing.

Will you please donate today to help Australian wildlife on the long road to recovery from its greatest crisis?

All donations of $2 or more are fully tax-deductible for Australian residents.

Grey-Headed Flying Fox

There is so much to be done – over the next weeks, months, years and even decades.

At Taronga’s Wildlife Hospitals in Sydney and Dubbo we have been working round-the-clock to care for sick, injured and displaced animals from the drought and bushfires.

Many of these animals need ongoing medical care and rehabilitation, many of these populations have been nearly decimated. Others rescued from the path of fire and drought will require shelter and food until they there is safe habitat for them to return to but many have no homes to go back to.

How your gift will help:

  • Our unique platypus has been hit hard by Australia’s worst drought, and recent rains haven’t been enough to restore habitat in many areas. Right now, Taronga’s Wildlife Hospital is caring for seven platypuses rescued from near death on a drying river in the Canberra region.
  • Nearly a quarter of Koala habitat in NSW alone has been destroyed. Since November 2019 our Taronga Western Plains Zoo Hospital has treated an unprecedented 22 Koalas - that is more than normally seen in a year.
  • Last summer, thousands of grey-headed flying foxes died in the soaring temperatures. We now need your support to hand-raise the orphaned babies and then socialise them in our flying fox crèche. Only after creching can they be safely released back into the wild.
  • Taronga was able to rescue around 60 Booroolong frogs from the drought-affected Namoi River. We are now waiting anxiously to see if they will mate in our breeding tanks, and build up their fragile population. Your gift today can help us continue important breeding programs like these.

Koala

Taronga needs your help to meet the urgent needs of vulnerable animals –  as we do everything we can to support their long road to recovery.

Your much-needed gifts will support and fund treatment, care and shelter of animals not just affected by recent bushfires, but also the prolonged drought and extreme weather events that have caused a record amount of animals to come through our Wildife Hospitals.

Please donate today.
